Abidjan RO-RO Terminal achieves record performance

22 September 2022

The TERRA terminal which handles roll on roll off vessels at the port of Abidjan dealt with over 2,687 vehicles between 22 and 29 August 2022, chalking up a record performance. The vehicles – mainly saloon and city cars or construction machines – were transported on the MATORELL and PLEIADES SPIRIT vehicle carriers from Thailand, China, Japan, South Africa and India.

This performance is all the more remarkable as the fleet occupancy rate was 95% when the MATORELL docked and 70% when the PLEIADES SPIRIT came in. The number of vehicles handled in one week equates to 82% of the average monthly traffic of the Ro-Ro terminal and 78% of all vehicles handled in August.

TERRA achieved record rates of 115 units/hour on the MATORELL and 121 units/hour on the PLEIADES SPIRIT during the operations, more than doubling the rate of 50 units/hour set out in the concession agreement with the Autonomous Port of Abidjan.

This performance stems from the expertise of our operational teams and our efforts to modernise the Abidjan Ro-Ro terminal. We fully intend to continue in this vein in the aim of accommodating and operating ro-ro ships with higher capacities to cover the needs of our customers in Côte d'Ivoire and in the subregion,” said Joël Broux, Managing Director of TERRA.

After being awarded the "Green Terminal" label in June 2022 for effectively reducing the environmental impact of its activities, the Abidjan Ro-Ro terminal is now endeavouring to consolidate its environmental approach by recovering and recycling waste, supporting environmental initiatives and acquiring more energy-efficient equipment.
